Ford Community Fellows

The Ford Community Fellow award is given to rural residents in Oregon and Siskiyou County, California who have demonstrated a commitment to community service and a dedication to the pursuit of rural community vitality. Ford Community Fellows are nominated by Ford Family Foundation staff and partner contractors who deliver the Ford Institute Leadership Program. Each Fellow receives a $12,000 annual unrestricted monetary award and is eligible for up to two renewal awards. Fellows are expected to develop their own plan to explore, learn, and practice the art of community building.

The Ford Community Fellow promotes community building and vitality by some or all of the following activities:
 
  • Coaching communities toward their own vision, priorities and measures of success (indicators)
  • Promoting systems thinking and collaboration
  • Modeling a commitment to “life- long learning”
  • Leveraging local resources to draw on external sources, including individuals, philanthropy, non-profits, business, and government
  • Encouraging development of projects and programs that draw on best theory and practice
  • Directing communities to full use of their own resources of time, energy, and dollars to move projects and programs forward (make things happen)
  • Assisting communities in measuring their own success
  • Convening individuals, groups and communities to strengthen social capital and networks while learning from each other
  • Sustaining strong relationships with key stakeholders, adjoining community leaders, and The Ford Institute for Community Building

Amy Callahan - Cottage Grove
Amy has lived in Cottage Grove since 2003. She holds a BS degree in anthropology from Oregon State University and is currently the Cottage Grove Community Hospital Foundation Executive Director. She has been involved in Cottage Grove as a Community Sharing board member, a Cottage Grove Chamber board member, and chair of the Cottage Grove Vision Keeper’s. She is a graduate of Cottage Grove’s Cohort 2, Ford Institute Leadership Program and is an active Ford Community Ambassador. Amy believes in putting her energy and enthusiasm into helping implement solutions in her community.

Kelly Poe - Ontario
Kelly has lived and worked in the Western Treasure Valley area since 1995. Her community service career began early as an AmeriCorps*VISTA member and leader. She is currently the Director of the Malheur Commission on Children and Families. Kelly has been instrumental in helping to establish a system to serve runaway and homeless youth, a Regional Food Bank, a Boys & Girls Club, and a Relief Nursery.  She volunteers regularly for programs like the free health clinic and emergency food pantry. Kelly is a graduate of Ontario Region’s Cohort 1, Ford Institute Leadership Program and is an active Ford Community Ambassador.  In Kelly’s own words, “It is my passion to serve my community. Malheur County is my community and I am committed to making it a stronger, healthier place”.

Amy Reiersgaard - Tillamook
Amy has lived near the Oregon Coast since 2003. She holds a BS degree in Biological Science from California State University, Hayward, and a Masters in the Art of Teaching from Western Oregon University, Monmouth. Amy is currently the program manager for MTC Works focusing on workforce development.  She has been an active volunteer around Tillamook County including: Tillamook County Futures Council, Food Roots, Bay City Council, Tillamook Bay Child Care Center, Tillamook Estuaries Partnership, local Chambers of Commerce and the Oregon Community Foundation.  She is a graduate of Tillamook’s Cohort 1, Ford Institute Leadership Program in Tillamook, and is an active Community Ambassador. Amy moved to the Oregon coast in order to raise her son in rural America, to give back to a community as she had been raised.

Kathy Rementeria - Hines
Kathy moved to Harney County in 1980. She holds a BS degree in Elementary Education from Southern Oregon State College, Ashland. Kathy is currently a Community Development Coordinator for Oregon Department of Human Services.  Kathy is a graduate of Harney County’s Cohort 1, Ford Institute Leadership Program and is an active Community Ambassador. She describes this experience as follows, “During the program, I met people I had never known, and made some good friends. The learning, relationship building, and skill building that took place during those sessions were of such value that I wanted to be able to share them with others, and became a Ford Community Ambassador. Working with individuals from the Foundation and taking advantage of the opportunities for learning and skill building the Foundation provides has been beneficial to my community and me”. She goes on to say, “The Ford Community Fellowship Award is the next step in community building. I am looking forward to working with current and emerging community leaders to help our community fulfill its potential”.

Janet Zalewski - Mt. Shasta
Janet has lived predominately in Siskiyou County for the past 14 years. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Administration from California State University, Chico, and an MBA from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. Janet is retired after a 11 year stint as the Executive Director, Siskiyou Family YMCA in Yreka. Janet is a graduate of Yreka’s Cohort 1, Ford Institute Leadership Program. She is an active Ford Community Ambassador and participated on the design team that ultimately created Camp Ford, an outdoor leadership experience for Siskiyou County youth entering high school. During the spring/summer/fall of 2010, Janet completed a life-long dream of thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail.  Currently, Janet is a board member for the Siskiyou Training and Employment Program and volunteers in her words, “for the Siskiyou Land Trust in an effort to save and conserve wildlands, forests and agricultural areas in Northern California”.
