Message from The President
The "dog days" of summer are upon us. It's frequently in the 90's here, but some very cool things are happening at the Foundation. This is the season we convene our several scholarship programs at the Valley River Inn in Eugene, Oregon, and at Salishan Lodge in Gleneden Beach on the Oregon coast. Music wafts from the county fairs and the band shells in rural Oregon. Kids are at a youth camp we are piloting, just down river from, of all places, Happy Camp in Siskiyou County, California. Our new Visual Arts program has been launched, too, and you can read about it on this site. With grants, scholarship programs and the Ford Institute's leadership training going on there is no time to swing in the hammock.

The pilot youth leadership program -- Camp Ford: Adventures in Leadership -- was held from July 25-Aug. 1 at Paradise Point on the wild and scenic Klamath River. Twenty-eight 8th graders from across Siskiyou County (14 boys and 14 girls) spent eight days discovering personal assets, increasing self-confidence, learning group decision making skills and completing service projects. While getting grounded in personal and community leadership concepts, the rising 9th graders experienced guided whitewater rafting and living in tents without electricity or cell phone coverage (no texting for eight days)!
